De Blasio Receives Endorsement from Powerful Health Care Workers Union 1199 SEIU

After a slow start, Bill de Blasio's campaign is gaining momentum. Within the past week, de Blasio has received endorsements from hip-hip mogul Russell Simmons and now one of the city's most powerful unions. The New York Post reports that the healthcare workers union 1199 SEIU is endorsing de Blasio in the Democratic primary for mayor.

Before the endorsements from Simmons and 1199 SEIU, de Blasio's campaign was struggling to gain any traction. De Blasio will be running in the Democratic primary for mayor against the likes of Council Speaker Christine Quinn, Comptroller John Liu, former Comptroller Bill Thompson, as well as rumored candidate Anthony Weiner.

The union's backing of de Blasio is a blow to Quinn, who has close ties to the group, and was believed to of had a good chance of gaining the group’s endorsement. One of Quinn's campaign advisers is Jennifer Cunningham, who was a former top operative with the union.

According to Capital New York, De Blasio's campaign manager Bill Hyers released the following statement:

"Game-changing is a cliché in politics, but not when it comes to the mayoral endorsement of 1199 SEIU. Representing more than 250,000 members over five boroughs, no endorsement means more than this."
